The National Institute of Design (NID) is one of India’s most prestigious design institutions, declared an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. Getting into NID means competing against thousands of students from across the country for a limited number of seats.
The NID entrance exam happens in two stages. The first is the Design Aptitude Test Prelims (NID DAT Prelims), a 100-mark test covering sketching and design aptitude. Out of all students who appear, only around 1,200 to 1,500 qualify for the second stage. The second stage is the NID DAT Mains, also called the Studio Test, which involves material handling, audio-visual rounds, memory tests and in some years, portfolio presentation and personal interviews.
For every NID seat, roughly 3 to 4 students qualify Prelims and go on to compete at Mains. Final selection is based on a weighted score of both stages.
NID offers B.Des programs in specialisations including Product Design, Communication Design, Textile Design, Animation Film Design, Graphic Design, Furniture and Interior Design, Transportation Design and more, across campuses in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kurukshetra, Vijayawada and Jorhat.

For NID B.Des, you must have passed or be appearing for 10+2 from any recognised board. Your stream does not matter — Science, Commerce and Humanities students are all eligible.
No prior drawing experience is required. We train from the basics.
NID graduates are among the most sought-after designers in India and globally. They work with companies like Microsoft, Samsung, Adobe, Tata Consultancy Services, Ather Energy, Autodesk and Byju’s, among many others.
Career paths include Product Design, UI/UX Design, Transportation Design, Communication Design, Animation, Game Design, Textile Design, Fashion Design and Strategic Design Management. NID graduates work across industries including technology, automotive, consumer goods, education, gaming, retail and e-commerce.
Many NID alumni go on to start their own design studios or consultancies.
